Anonymous asked: Do you happen to know why male primates/humans have nipples?
Because females have nipples. And males would look weird with just hair there.
A more science-y explanation is that it’s a developmental holdover. Some people would claim they’re vestigial organs, but it never evolutionarily served any purpose whatsoever (so they’re wrong!). Some people would claim it to be an evolutionary spandrel, which admittedly is a much better guess (so they’re not completely wrong depending on their argument) because it’s not adaptive in any which way for males to have this (surprise! sometimes evolution gives us nonadaptive traits!). But when you look at the biological development, it makes more sense that they’re just developmental holdovers. And that’s because everyone starts off female in utero (yup, females are the default sex). Male nipples developed before sexual differentiation occurs. So which is it, developmental holdover or evolutionary spandrel? It’s always best to abide by Morgan’s Canon that the simplest explanation is the best explanation. And in that regard, developmental holdover wins.
So basically, males have nipples because females have nipples.
